課程概述 |
This course leads students to learn and practice "formal writing" (as defined in Course Objective) in creative ways in order to not only cultivate the ability to navigate within the form but also expand the capacity of such a form of writing.
In this semester, we have four projects:
1. An Application Letter to the Baron on the Tree
Writing a formal letter with a clear function to a fictional character with an official position, we practice the appropriate register, the effective presentation of information, and the art of persuasion.
2. A Culinary Translation of a Quote
Translating a quote from a literary critique into a culinary analysis, we explore what we can perceive in a quote (the author, the argument, and the context) and experiment with the metaphorical capacity of thinking.
3. A Literary Manifesto of a Nonhuman Creature
Composing a literary manifesto from a nonhuman perspective, we enjoy the critical creativity of questioning and groundbreaking powers of an argument.
4. An Encyclopedia Entry of a Monster
Creating a monster out of our own problematics, we investigate the depths and shapes of our creations through negotiating with different registers of writing.
(Upcoming) the four projects of the second semester:
1. The Description of a Psychic Apparatus
Visualising our individual psychic structures in apparatuses, we not only creatively reflect on our thought processes but also practice the description of theoretical models and exemplificayion of various instances.
2. A Catalogue of Ghosts (plus touristic agenda for them, plus sorting hats into a school)
Classifying the existing ghosts in our lives, we critically and intuitively think about how to witness and systemize the haunting presences and how to let writing be a critical and colorful containment of the darkness.
3. The Guide to A City of Paradox (genesis myth, touristic post)
Composing a guide to a city built out of a paradoxical problem, we construct multiple perspectives in different registers to imagine a world and a community that embody a way of thinking.
4. The Intepretations of a Pandemic (Public health report, individual experiences )
Translating the cause and effects of a problem into a prevelant disease, we think about our encounter with the unexpected and the emergence of the repressed. We investigate the uncontrollable through the powers of different registers. |
課程目標 |
This course aims for the training of “formal writing,” whose characteristics include:
1. The target readers include people you do not personally know. The readers do not need to know about you in order to understand your writing.
2. The writing belongs to a certain kind of register that enables readers of a certain kind of training to understand you. People with different cultural backgrounds but similar professional training can understand each other well. It is a particular mode of inclusion and exclusion.
3. This kind of writing values effectiveness in the communication with others over the private explorations of oneself.
4. We can write a clear outline for this kind of writing.
5. The range of application of the ideas in this kind of writing is reflected upon and openly specified.
6. Academic formal writers are acutely aware of what has been said about the topic they are talking about, and they need to engage with them.
7. Formal writing seriously gives credit to other people’s writings and ideas. |
課程要求 |
Important information and rules are communicated in the first class. If you do not come to the first class, please drop the class, or you will fail the class. (If you cannot come to the first class for particular reasons, please communicate with me beforehand.)
1. Class Participation:
Class participation is crucial for this class. We create and explore processes of writing and thinking that can hardly be made up on your own. Please do come to class to enjoy.
2. The Process of Writing:
The sincere and creative process of writing is more fundamental than the temporary presented works themselves. This class will create stages and processes for you to work and rework on one piece of writing multiple times, at home and in class. Please be expected to rework and revise your work multiple times in this class.
Each project takes four weeks, which roughly correspond to these stages:
1. Initiation and exploration of the territory: interactive introductions to the functions, capacities, and realms of the project.
2. Brainstorming, explorative fragments, and outlining: in class activities that explore the priliminary stage of composition aiming to creatively help the helpless process of thinking to write.
3. Writing, peer review, and revision: writing and revision that are combined with guided and then independent peer review.
4. Post-writing activities and individual sessions: some exercises to help apply and reflect on the writings you have finished
On paper, I will only respond to the final draft on paper, but I will accompany your writing throughout the process. You will have multiple chances to discuss with me during the process.
25% of the scores of the writings will go to the effort put in the process of writing. If you miss some stages of reworking, you may not get much of the scores out of this part. If you are absent, you can try to make up for the process. If not, points will be taken away from this part.
3. Works |
預期每週課後學習時數 |
Hard to say. Four works (2-4 pages) will be done through stages in the semester. So I would say: you would not/have better not spend endless hours in a particular week to finish a work, but you will have something to do every week. 不涼,但也不絕望,紮實甜。工作過程重要,想要一學期熬夜四次解決這回合的話不合適。 |

class participartion |
20% |
Class participation is crucial for this class. We create and explore processes of writing and thinking that can hardly be made up on your own. Please do come to class to enjoy.
*An absence without leave takes 5% from your final score. Three absences without leave causes F in the final score.
*Please come to class on time so others do not need to make extra efforts to make up for the parts of group activities you miss. Being late for more than 5 minutes takes 1-3% away from the final score, depending on your time of arrival.
*peer review counts as presence. Each missed review for your peer takes 5% away from your final score. |
2. |
pieces of writing |
80% |
Works: 80% (4 works, 20% each)
* Only paper copies are accepted for the final drafts that I mark and give scores.
*If you submit your works late, I will read them and give scores, but I will not mark and return them. 50% will be taken off the score of the writing.
I ususally mark each writing in four items (each 25%)—two of which belong to expression, and the other two content. The items vary from one work to another. |
